What Kashmir is like in December
December is the start of winter in Kashmir. Days in Srinagar are cold and nights often drop below freezing. The harshest stretch of winter, known locally as Chillai Kalan, begins around 21 December, so the second half of the month is noticeably colder than the first.
Snow is the reason most people come, but it is never guaranteed. Gulmarg has the best chance of snow in December, followed by Sonamarg and Pahalgam. Srinagar itself gets snow on some days but not every year. We plan December trips around Gulmarg and tell you honestly about the forecast before you book.
Heavy snowfall can close the road to Sonamarg or delay flights for a few hours, so we keep one flexible day in every December plan. Fog in Delhi can also delay morning flights, so an afternoon flight on your departure day is safer.
